“Free Film School” might sound too good to be true, but that’s exactly what we offered yet again this summer at Bowerbirdy Academy!
We’re not just talking about kids learning to hold a camera. We’re talking about unleashing creativity, making new friends, and, of course, having a ton of fun! This summer at Bowerbirdy Academy, our Free Film School was a blockbuster hit, and the stars of the show were our brilliant young filmmakers.

Jumping Into Filmmaking
From the moment Bowerbirdy Academy’s first free Film School of the summer kicked off, the energy was electric. Kids aged 11 and up arrived with big ideas, ready to dive into the world of filmmaking. And they didn’t waste any time getting started. Whether it was their first time behind the camera or they had a bit of experience under their belts, every child got stuck in.
When asked what skills they’d picked up, one young filmmaker commented that they “learned how to use a camera properly and edit videos with text and pictures. It was so cool to see how everything came together!”
Making Films and Making Friends
It’s not just about learning the technical stuff (though we did cover that). What really makes our free Film School stand out is the way it brings kids together. Meeting new people, coming up with a wild idea for a film, and then bringing it to life together. That’s exactly what happens!
As one of our participants puts it, “You get together with people that you didn’t know before, make friends with them, and do something totally random—then film it!”
Another child adds, “It’s really fun, and you wouldn’t want to miss out at all. Plus, you get to learn while having fun. I’d definitely recommend it to a friend!”
Behind the Scenes: Learning and Laughing
We’re big believers that learning should never be boring, and our free Film School proves just that. Kids not only pick up new skills, but they laugh, share ideas, and enjoy every minute of it. One of our young directors told us, “It’s a learning opportunity, but it’s also a great way to get outside, engage with other people, and just have a good time.”
